Allothers must bring data.” - W Edward Deming</div><div>This age-old quote has been used many times and whether you believe in God or not, what’s clear is data has become the foundation upon which we base our decisions. But how do we establish trust in our data?</div><div>I was recently at a Health Informatics Society Australia event where one of the speakers gave a presentation on the devices she uses to capture her health, movement, and activity data on a daily basis. </div><div>Obtaining this data was clearly important to her—so much so that she had three different devices to ensure she captured all the relevant information. She was in Information Technology, so on a regular basis she downloaded the information from the manufacturers’ websites, checked the data, then used it to create a set of graphs etc., to monitor and track her progress.</div><div>Well, the download from one of the devices reported she had taken 28,000 steps.</div><div>Plausible, but probably not on an average workday. (For the laypeople among us, 2,000 average steps is about a mile, which means 28,000 steps equals about 14 miles, or 22.5 kilometres—just a bit longer than a half marathon!) </div><div>Clearly, this was an anomaly. And because she because she had been smart enough to download the information and check it against the data on her other devices, she could eliminate it and not have it affect her progress charts.</div><div>It left me wondering what I would do if I wasn’t a smart IT person, didn’t download and double check my data, but simply used the data presented to make decisions. So, out of curiosity, I opened the Health App on my iPhone, and looked at the data. There was a significant amount of information on steps, distance, and altitude captured for multiple instances on multiple days. But then I thought, “How do I know if it’s right?”</div><div>The answer was I didn’t. I had no means to verify if what I was looking at was right. Imagine if that information was going into a system where people were using it to make decisions about things that affected my life and I couldn’t check or confirm the information was correct. How could I trust their decisions?</div><div>We now live in a world where Big Data has become the next big decision aid. And being able to analyse the data I have access to—on a much larger scale—has provided marketers, salespeople, and business decision makers with more data than ever to base their decisions. </div><div>With the advent of the Internet of Things—with data collected from our fridges, phones, GPS, and all the other connected devices that we as a population are now buying—Big Data will continue to get bigger and harder to assess. Now more than ever, we need dependable solutions that can identify and deliver trusted data—that in turn will drive intelligent business decisions.</div><div>About the Author.</div><div>Neil Currie is the CEO of QFire Software.
